Every Walker in Star Wars
There are many different types of walkers in Star Wars, all starting with AT (all-terrain) and each ending with a unique set of two or three letters that stand for something. Here is a list and description of each one.
AT-RT (All-terrain Recon Transport): This is one of the first walkers, and the only one used by the republic. It is the smallest and the most nimble. It can actually run and can run very fast. It is an open-faced cockpit, but has a shield in front. These walkers were used mainly in the Clone Wars and were mostly retired when the Empire took over. A few prominent appearances include in the battle of Umbara, and the Battle of Kachirho. This is the original two-legged walker. It inspired future designs, like the chicken walker, the AT-ST.
AT-TE (All=terrain Tactical Enforcer): This is a dangerous walker. Used only in the Clone wars, this tank like vehicle has six legs and is SERIOUSLY built like a tank. It is build semi low to the ground and can even hold up to 40 clones! This has two main pilots: the gunner, which sits on their gunner station and fires a nearly 3 meter-long blaster cannon. The other is the pilot, which has a highly-durable windshield to protect them. Inside, the clones are strapped in a long each wall similar to imperial shuttles. This vehicle does not transform into a direct copy for the empire, though. The empire does however, in fact, keep the semi-similar vehicle titled the Juggernaut throughout its time.
AT-AP (All-terrain Attack Pod): This less-known vehicle was used throughout the Clone wars for republic clones, and was really only prominently shown in the movies for a brief moment on Kashyyyk in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. This walker is pretty bulky, and sits on top of three legs. It has a cannon similar to the AT-TE– it is very long and powerful. People often think this was the end of the line for this vehicle. I agree, but I do see a similar correspondence with the AT-DP, which also possesses a long, powerful blaster cannon.
AT-OT (All-terrain Open Transport): Unless you are a mega fan, you most likely have never heard of this. This walker has an uncanny resemblance to the AT-TE, except (as the name suggests) an open top. There are also other differences, though. The ‘head’ of the vehicle is flat topped. There are also prominent gunners on both ends of the walker. This vehicle can only briefly be seen in Revenge of the Sith. It is on Felucia, the colorful and strange (avatar) Pandora-like planet. It is seen around the time of Aayla Secura’s death. The rest will be out of order since there are SO many (more than you realize).
AT-ACT (All-terrain Cargo Transport): This 32 meter tall walker is a sight for sure. This vehicle can be seen in Rogue One- on Scarif if I remember correctly. It is much taller than the AT-AT, although similar in design except for the length and thinness of the legs, and the yellow siding. This is used for transporting cargo, as the name suggests. The vehicles are not meant for combat but can take a hit (even X-wings can’t get through it). This vehicle evolves for First Order walkers, along with the AT-AT.
SPHA-T (Self-Propelled Heavy Artillary mark-T): Ok, ok, yeah, this isn’t techinacally an AT-walker, but it still is a walker. It is essentially a enormous cannon that fires a laser beam out of a radar dish. It can walk, and has a lot of legs. This is at least 3 times bigger than the AT-TE. Notable times this is used is in the Battle of Geonosis, and the most notable in my opinion, the battle on Malastare. This walker is used in the clone wars. The cannons on this walker are some of the most powerful of the Republic. This doesn’t really evolve into anything, but if you count the Death Star’s superlaser dish, that would be OK.
AT-MA (All-Terrain Mobile Artillary): Before making this list, I had never in my life heard of the AT-MA. That makes sense, because the only time it is ever shown (if I am correct) is on Starkiller base when General Hux is giving his speech. I guess you could consider this an AT-AT variant, but I disagree. The amount of differences on this is too much. It has four legs; a similar attribute to the AT-AT. But the main body is much shorter, and the head is even built into the body. It also has two massive blaster cannons in the front, and the sides of the main body are curved like a turtle’s shell. I honestly wish this was shown more in the Sequels, because it would of made it better in my opinion.
AT-AC (All-terrain Armored Cannon): I believe this walker can be seen patrolling the streets of Janix, if I remember right in Maul: Shadow Lord. This can also be seen in the Bad Batch I think. This walker is very similar to the AT-ST, but more boxy and rigid than the ST. There really isn’t a clear image of this walker, though. I just think of it as another early imperial walker.
AT-DP (All-terrain Defense Pod): This vehicle was mostly seen in the show Rebels, and was used to train Imperial cadets. But this AT-ST copy isn’t so similar. It has a long cannon that is powerful, and its crew of two are usually only going to defend bases while in the vehicle, while the AT-ST goes on patrol missions. Furthermore, the AT-DP has an angular back of the head, as well as being taller.
AT-AT (All-terrain Armored Transport): The AT-AT is possibly the most famous and memorable walker. It premieres in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back on Hoth attacking Echo base, and has reappeared in other shows like Rebels. The massive walker has two legs, and Captain Rex actually commented on how they got up there. The walker is built on four segmented legs, and it is known to stomp and crush its fleeing opponents by stepping on them. The ‘head’ possesses two large blaster cannons that are extremely powerful. It can move its head, too. The walker has two main pilots, as well as a bridge officer and 40 stormtroopers. To answer Rex’s question, we know that they at least dismount using ascension cables. It could be that they ascend the same way, but I speculate that they enter from a raised platform. There are weaknesses to this imposing vehicle, though. As shown in the show Rebels, its neck is vulnerable. The legs can also be sliced with a lightsaber if you have a Jedi with you. But the most effective way so far was invented by Luke Skywalker– wrapping cables around its legs with snowspeeders, so that when it takes a step, it falls over and crumbles. This article is released at a time before the official release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in the theatres, but I know that they appear scaling a mountain in that movie as well.
AT-ST (All-terrain Scout Transport): The Chicken Walker, or the AT-ST, first appears in Return of the Jedi on the Forest Moon of Endor. It is maybe the most successful walker in star wars. The nimble, strong walker has massive defense and can certainly take a hit. Unlike the the Clone Wars, pilots of the AT-ST are forced to look out of two small viewports (there are two pilots) instead of one massive one like the AT-AC. This walker has two to three cannons and can decimate rebel troops in a single blast. The way you enter and exit is from a circular hatch at the top of the walker. There is a slightly different variant used by the First order as well. I also just figured out that these walkers were on a 1:1 scale for the movies. Yes, they were life size unlike the stop-motion mini AT-ATs. One way I remember this walker is when in both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, you hear the creaking of the AT-ST as it walks toward you– likely to destroy you.
AT-M6 (All-terrain MegaCalibre 6): Unique for having a number in its name, it is essentially a refined AT-AT. It is used by the First order only, and has fixed the cable problem that occured on Hoth in the Imperial Era. The legs are built kind of like an ape– with curved bases curving backwards so that it could not trip over. Another thing noticible is what the Sequels always seem to do. Copy a thing from the OT and make it bigger. Yeah, its much bigger that the AT-AT just like Starkiller Base and the Death Star and Sith Star Destroyers. It escorted the AT-HH in the Battle of Crait in the Last Jedi, but I have not seen it anywhere else.
AT-HH (All-terrain Heavy Hauler): Before making this article, I thought the AT-HH was the Super cannon thingy in the Last Jedi. But now I understand that it is actually the two blocks pulling it (They look tiny compared to the cannon, but are actually about the same size as the AT-M6s). This next statement is something I did not believe at first– it has 14856 legs. Yes. That many. Apparently, the First order first was going to use snails, but decided to use this piece of junk. It is basically a short rectangular prism with legs. In all, this walker is a mechanical ox. AT-DT (All-terrain Defense Turret): This walker you may have seen in the movie Solo (although you couldn’t have gotten a good look). It is seen trudging through the muddy ground of Mimban in the Battle of Mimban. It is built like an AT-ST, but the cockpit and main body is a bit different. The only armored part is the front, which also hosts a massive set of cannons. The rest is unprotected, making it more reckless and probably meant for war.
UA-TT (Urban Assault Triped Transport): While not an ‘AT’, it is still very much a walker and built like an AT. Honestly, I have to say– This looks amazing. Only I don’t remember it much from the movie it was in, The Rise of Skywalker. It was seen on Kijimi patrolling the streets with a headlight on in the dead of night. Even though this looks cool, you have to trust me on that you wouldn’t want to mess with this thing. It has two main legs like the AT-ST, and a head like one, but it has an arm that stretches out and picks up protesting citizens with its spider-like appendages. Other differences include the extended part of the back of its head, and the flatness of its head. It does also include a minor cannon on its head, but it mainly is to deal with unarmed citizens I believe.
