Humans can mate with at least four other species to produce offspring
Long before the Prequel trilogy, back when ‘Return of the Jedi‘ came to theaters in 1983, some fans may have realized that humans could mate with at least one or more sentient species in the galaxy. In the opening scenes of ‘Return of the Jedi‘, when Luke and his team plan to rescue the frozen Han Solo from Jabba, a hodge-podge band of exotic performers and dancers are seen entertaining the large slug-like Hutt. Amongst the dancers in Max Reebo’s band is a Theelin-human hybrid that was revealed to be known as Rystáll Sant.
With electric-like red hair, lateral cheek horns, and purple spots dotting her skin, Sant fit in well among the other performers. But unlike the other performers, Rystáll was born a hybrid- with one of her parents a human, and the other a Theelin. Another such example of a Human-Theelin hybrid was Diva Shaliqua – a dancer seen accompanying Jabba the Hutt in ‘The Phantom Menace.’
Though we do know the general physical appearance of pure Theelins, not a lot else is known about them and they are generally thought to be quite rare. They typically had very brightly-colored skin and hair with lateral head horns, such as the Theelin bounty hunter known as Latts Razzi. Other notable Theelin included Amos Tillian – a communications engineer who worked for the Galactic Republic during the High Republic Era, and Chass na Chadic – a member of the New Republic’s Alphabet Squadron, which hunted down the Imperial starfighter unit known as Shadow Wing shortly after the Battle of Endor.
Another species seen in Star Wars canon that was capable of mating with humans was the Twi’lek. In the tenth episode of Season Two of ‘The Clone Wars’: “The Deserter”, we learn of a clone named Cut Lawquane who deserted from the First Battle of Geonosis after his comrades were brutally killed and ended up falling in love with a Twi’lek named Suu on Saleucami. Though Cut wasn’t actually their biological father, we learn that Suu had two children that were Twi’lek-Human hybrids: Shaeeah and Jek. The Lawquane family would actually make a reappearance several years later in the ‘Star Wars: Bad Batch’ series when Hunter briefly reunites with Cut after a long time of separation.
Interestingly, Twi’lek-Human hybrids had a wide variety of appearances. Shaeeah Lawquane looked almost fully Twi’lek, with her mottled skin color the only giveaway to her hybrid physiology, while her brother Jek possessed two lekku and eyebrows, which most full male Twi’leks lacked. In contrast, Jacen Syndulla- son of the Twi’lek, Hera Syndulla, and the deceased human, Kanan Jarrus – appeared nearly completely human.
Two other species that we know humans could mate with and produce offspring were the Mirialans and the Espirions. Maize Raynshi was a Mirialan-human hybrid that was friends with the Force-sensitive Karr Nuq Sin in Force Collector; a novel that tells the story of a young human boy who discovers his ability to sense the histories of objects through the Force by touching them. Maize’s father was a human who served in the First Order and her mother was a Mirialan woman known as Anaya Raynshi.
From the comic books series, Star Wars: Princess Leia, we learn of a hybrid species known as ‘Alder-Espirions’. In her quest to discover surviving Alderaanians after the Death Star’s obliteration of her home planet, Leia learns of an Alderaanian diaspora community dwelling on the planet Espirion. Among this community of hybrid Alder-Espirions is Chief Beon Beonel. With characteristic red skin and yellow eyes, Beon largely resembled biological Espirions and was highly respected in Espirion society.
